Farmer Song Fest is a musical celebration that has been going on since 2007. Farmer Song Fest has hosted bands including: The Greencards, The Spring Standards, Trampled By Turtles, Ari Hest, The Mayflies, Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart, The Grand Marquis, The Giving Tree Band, Blue Cut, Caroline and the Goodnight Sleeps, and Pumptown. The festival is a community event that promotes new music and supports fundraisers for local groups.

Farmer Song Fest has diversified to kick each year's music festival off with the 5K Race, Running of the Trees, as well as a 1 Mile Walk and Free Kid's Fun Run. This one-of-a-kind event will take runners on a cross-country tour across Hynek Tree Farm, traversing through the heart of their lush-green deciduous tree nursery and around 5 different ponds as they skirt fields of soy beans, dirt roads, puddles, woods, and ditches.

The festival name comes from a play written by Angie and Joe Hynek. In 2006, they completed their script for their new musical "Farmer Song" inspired by their experience farming in Ellston, IA through the 1980's Farm Crisis and the technology shift in the 1990's. The story tells how a young couple struggles to keep their land. It is a story shared by many during these tough times. The musical has won 2nd Place in the National Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Musical Theater Playwrighting Contest and has earned a Stewart Humanities Award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. It has been performed at the Iowa State Fair, Ames, IA, and Radcliffe, IA.

The Hynek Family Farm in Ellston, IA today has also diversified from traditional crops of corn, beans, cattle, and hogs to a tree farm and trucking business. The family also performs around the midwest in the band called Pumptown.

We've survived and we're ready to celebrate. Please join us for Farmer Song Fest so that we can continue to produce and grow this one of a kind music celebration in Southern Iowa.
